Mera kuchh samaan lauta do’ must be one of the most formidable and brilliant composition of legendary music director R. D. Burman. This is a mesmerizing song that has pain, longing, romance and almost tragic in its beauty.

O.P.Nayyar was another legend of the golden era who gave numerous hits. One of his favorites was ‘Aaiye Meharbaan’. The singer has done a commendable job in the song that perfectly captures mood of the seduction and cabaret at the same time. S D Burman was one of the most accomplished music composers Indian music industry has ever seen. Remember his song ‘Jaane wo kaise log the’ from the movie Pyaasa? Hemant Kumar will literally floor you with his finesse and class.

‘Naa Jaane Kyon’ was rendered in the immortal voice of Lata Mangeshkar. It was a very sweet, nice and appealing song from the movie ‘chhoti si baat’. ‘Na tum Humein Jaano’ from the movie ‘Baat ek raat ki’, was sung by Hemant da and it was everything that you could possible aspire for; soft, gentle, sentimental, pure and laid back.

‘Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh’ from Dil apna aur preet parayi was a Shankar Jaykishen composition and sung in the melodious voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The track had soft gentle rocking country-style rhythm and Lata, well, what more can I add to her voice quality? She was simply stupendous and quality personified.

Bollywood songs have entertained us for the past so many years. Songs have always been an important feature of all the Hindi movies. Songs like Ajeeb dastan hai yeh, yeh raat bheegi bheegi, oh haseena zulfon wali, yeh samah, samah hai yeh pyar ka, tera mera pyar amar have been a few evergreen songs that have pleased our hearts since ages. While bollywood songs have surely given the Indian audience their dose of entertainment, they have in some way defined what Indian cinema truly stands for. It has been a major factor towards contributing and shaping up what the word Hindi cinema holds for a universal audience at large.

Musical talents like K L Sehgal, Kishore Kumar, Khaiyyam, Mohd. Rafi, R D Burman, Lata Mangeshkar, S D Burman, Asha Bhonsle, and A R Rehman have been a boon to the Indian film and music industry. Songs of the1950s and 60s signaled arrival of western music in Hindi films. The early years of Indian cinema i.e., 30s and 40s had primarily classical music with less use of instruments in the film songs. Today however, music in Bollywood has changed tremendously.

Today, Bollywood songs even though quintessentially remains the way they have been over the years, they have been packaged differently. One sure sees an evident influence of western music fused with the traditional Hindi/Urdu lyrics. Recent music composers like Salim Sulaiman, Shankar Ehsaan Roy, A R Rahman, Himesh Reshammiya have no doubt retained the aroma of Hindi music in the filim songs of Bollywood but they have also added a new dimension to these songs. There is a fresh vibrant melody that seems to be entertaining not just the youth of the country but also those that have been a fan of old melodies and songs from the yesteryear.

Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh were two legends of Hindi film music. Each of them has given us numerous memorable hits. ‘Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Me’ from YashRaj banner movie ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ starring Big B is all time favorite of many people. Great Mukesh had rendered voice for this wonderful song and even today, it has not lost its eternal appeal. I remember, listening to his song one fine morning and it was hard to ignore its evergreen appeal and impact.

‘Chhokar Mere Man Ko’ from the movie Yaarana is another evergreen song. Starring Amitabh Bachchan once again, Kishore kumar made this song immortal. Lyrics are quite simple and yet so meaningful. One of the best songs of composer Rajesh Roshan.

‘Mere Naina Saawan Bhaado’ from the movie Mehbooba starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini is another great hit. Song came in both male and female version but I guess, I will be slightly biased towards male version. It has got this haunting feel that will stay with you and will make you yearn for more.

‘Ek Haseena Thi’ from Showman Subhash Ghai’s super hit Karz has not lost its touch even amongst youngsters of today. Recently, Himesh Reshamiya tried his hand at this song in a new form but old is always gold. The guitar work is splendid and composers Laxmikant-Pyaarelal have done an incredible job. Hindi is a language originated from Sanskrit through the Middle Indo Aryan Prakrit and the Middle Ages Apabhramsha. It was popularly known as Hindustani during the Mughal Period and further became popular as Hindi.

Gradually, the language was being accepted by various regions of the country and people started writing scripts, literature and even songs in Hindi.

The great Hindi songs are believed to be a reflection of Indian diversity and some take it as words from the Vedas.
