Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani – Music Review

Monday, January 18th, 2010

It has been quite some time, since the movie “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” (APKGK) was released. Movie proved to be a big hit but the bigger hit was its music. Penned by lyricist Irshad Kamil and sung by a bunch of talented singers like KK, Alisha Chinoy, Atif Aslam, Javed Ali, Kailash Kher, Neeraj Shridhar, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mika Singh, Hard Kaur, Soham, Rana Mazumdar, Ashish Pandit and Suzzane D Mello, songs of the movie are still topping the charts. ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif whereas music has been composed by hit music director Pritam Chakraborty. The music of the movie has been hailed as contemporary, energetic and pleasing.

Song, ‘Aa jao meri tamanna’ is a wonderful song sung by Javed Ali. It’s a breezy song and belongs to the romantic genre. Sweet song that you would like to hum. Album also contains remixed version of the same song which is faster in pace.

As is the norm, album has a hip-hop number ‘Follow me’ crooned by popular hip-hop artist Hard Kaur. She has sure made a name for herself in rap genre and here again she has excelled. A perfect song for youth brigade and discotheques. KK, Hard Kaur and Sunidhi Chauhan have rendered their voices to the next song, ‘Main tera dhadkan teri’, which is basically an energetic track. There is also a remixed version of the number but original is much better.

The pick of the album is ‘Tu Jaane Na’ crooned by talented Pak singer Atif Aslam. It is a soft song that will instantly strike a chord with you. Truly a soothing and beautiful love ballad. This song has three more versions and all of them are good enough.

Atif Aslam and Alisha Chinoy have sung together ‘Tera hone laga hoon’ and the song has continued its stay on the top. Other songs of the album are ‘Oh my god’ sung by Mika Singh and Sunidhi and ‘Prem ki naiyya’ rendered by Neeraj Shridhar and Suzzane D’mello. All in all, the music of the album is a must for any music lover.

Duets By Lata and Mukesh

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh were two legends of Hindi film music. Each of them has given us numerous memorable hits. The talent and quality offered by these two singers is kind of incomparable and can never be duplicated if Lata is rightly called ‘Queen of Melodies’ then Mukesh was termed as ‘King of Tragic songs’. His voice was so perfectly suited to tragic songs and that explains most of the eternal sad songs of Hindi cinema has been sung by Mukesh. Not that, Mukesh has sung only sad songs. He has also sung quite a good number of romantic songs as well. He has sung for almost all the top stars but has always been closely associated with Raj Kapoor’s voice. The combination of Mukesh, Raj Kapoor, Shailesh and Shankar Jaikishan was legendary. This combination of hugely talented artists kept churning one hit after another. Some Songs for Your Collection

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Do you remember song ‘Saare Sapne’ by Asha Bhosle? Well, you can’t really ignore the song because of its appeal. It was a deadly mix of love, separation and reunion. What more you could ask for? Its wonderful songs still run in my mind. Such was the appeal of this song. One song that got relatively lost because of poor response to the movie ‘Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye’ was ‘Pathron ke bane’. Very few people got a chance to hear this song. But I would ask you to give it a chance, at least once. If for nothing, then just hear it for his lyrics. It’s very inspiring and somehow gives you the belief that nothing is impossible in life. To substantiate my point, I will write few lines from the lyrics;

Koi to samjhaaye in logon ko jo aksar apne halat pe rote hain…

Chaaron taraf deewarein hain…to hone do

Deewaron mein darwaaze bhi hote hain…..

Recently relapsed movie New York managed to earn good review and revenue because of its plot and songs. Two songs of the movie that are very contrasting in nature, ‘Hain Junoon’ and ‘Mere Sang’ made listeners sit and notice. The first song is a typical party song with fun being the basic element of the song and KK has simply been amazing in the song. Song is kind of nostalgic because it will remind you of your college days and fun you had. Mere Sang is very soothing and it has beautiful composition.

‘Tujh mein rab dikhta hai’ from the movie Rab ne bana di Jodi was beautifully sung by Roop Kumar Rathod. The song is quite straight from the heart stuff and everything about it is so very Indian. A very romantic song, it became quite popular. Lastly, Lambi Judai from the movie ‘jannat’ proved to be quite popular and it grows slowly on you. A must have in your recent collection.

Many of you must be huge fans of Sufi songs. Such songs have unique appeal about them. Sufi songs are mystical and soothe your heart. They are very passionate. Whether it is a romantic song or sad sufi song, you cannot help but notice them and get totally lost in them. As far as origin is concerned the word ‘Sufi’ is derived from the Arabic word ’suf’ which means wool. Initially, Sufi songs were sung to celebrate love for God. This was a path of devotion and it did not have serious religious intonations. Sufi songs were ore in spiritual mode. Sufi songs were said to be sung in order to commune with God.

There are several renowned Sufi singers who have become immensely popular in hindi movies as well. The legend was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who introduced this genre when he sung Afreen Afreen. Thereafter, he sang in several movies as well before he died prematurely. His legion has been well carried by his nephew Rahet Fateh Ali Khan. Apart from him, other Sufi singers are, Abida Parvin, Sabri Brothers, Wadali Brothers, Kailash Kher and others. Some of the hit sufi songs of bollywood movies are:

1. Roothe yaar nu mana le jaadogariyan rab aape man jaavega – Kacche Dhaage

2. Tujhe dekh dekh sona tujhe dekh kar hai jagna maine yeh zindagani sang tere bitaani tujhme basi hai meri jaan hai jiya dhadhak dhadhak jaaye – Kalyug

3. Aankhein teri kitni haseen ke inka aashiq main ban gaya hoon mujhko chuppa le inme tu ishq hai maula mere maula mere – Anwar

Beautiful Songs

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Music in any form is appealing to the human senses. And why only humans? Some experiments show even animals react positively to the melody of music. Now, that simply demonstrates universal power of music. Talking about Indian music, we have come across numerous soul-stirring songs since the time bollywood started to churn music. Playback music completely changed the way music was perceived in the country. Indians were always very fond of music but filmy songs gave music new dimension and new loyal fan base. Let’s talk about some of the soothing songs that not only touched you but also proved to be a hit among the masses.

Song ‘Kasam Ki Kasam’ belongs to movie ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ from the Barjatya Banner. Movie was a dud but its songs sold like hot cakes. The song I am talking about is extremely gorgeous and manages to touch some hidden chords inside you. Lyrics are totally mesmerizing and song lovers really loved this song.

Movie Kisna failed to create any magic on big screen but it did give us a breathtaking song ‘Hum hain Iss pal Yahan’. This song is full of love and passion and you can’t remain untouched by it. The song, on one hand is utterly romantic and yet a thread of sadness runs through it. A R Rahman was truly wonderful in the composition and Udit Narayan and Madhushree did complete justice to the song.

Not for nothing we people love to call A R Rahman ‘Indian Mozart’. It’s hard to remember which one musician changed the film music industry as drastically as Rahman did. Though, he gained international recognition recently when he won ‘Oscar’ for Slumdog Millionaire but his talent was pretty evident since the time he made debut with unforgettable Roja. One song of his that consistently finds a mention in favorite list of numerous music lovers is ‘Tu Hi Re’ from the movie Bombay. It is just way too hard to resist the magic of this song. Probably this song might bring you tears and yet you can’t help but marvel at the eternal beauty of this song.
