Why old is gold?

Classic numbers in Hindi songs can be characterized as a perfect therapy to tired minds. They uplift our moods and take us to an era of innocence and purity. There was a time when artists happened to be classically trained maestros who gave their voice to Hindi film music. The contemporary drama style that existed around the globe was stage performances in the drama style. Inspired by the western concept or rather our own drama narration, the artists had virtual singing chorus and music backstage.

 The coordination seemed complete and the music was arranged in a wholesome style. There are typicality’s with is very much evident in the style of music of O P Nayyar and the guru of music, R.D. Burman. Old is gold because of its power that is still evident which inspires young musicians to mix old songs and mingle the same with pop music.

 The originality was also about lyrics and the style is very much exclusive. As recording studios in Bollywood were yet to be modernized, the music arrangement was very much authentic. The musicians and singers rehearsed for hours to get the right pitch and modulate the same into tracks. Classical touch was evident and many movies were also famous for its song and dance highlights.

 The melody in the voice of Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Mohd. Rafi saab is distinct. Actors too preferred allegiance to their favorite singer like Raj Kapoor always teamed with Mukesh and the veteran Kishore Kumar was multi talented in many aspects. The time of seventies and eighties was richly influence by modernity brought in by disco and pop music. This also touched Indian music and stalwarts like R.D Burman or Bappi Lahiri explored the possibility of Hindi pop with full justice to the Hindi music.

 

Each era is respected but the distinct quality of a lullaby ( lori ) or a devotional song (bhajan) from the olden days ruffles our bygone days.
