Mera kuchh samaan lauta do’ must be one of the most formidable and brilliant composition of legendary music director R. D. Burman. This is a mesmerizing song that has pain, longing, romance and almost tragic in its beauty.

O.P.Nayyar was another legend of the golden era who gave numerous hits. One of his favorites was ‘Aaiye Meharbaan’. The singer has done a commendable job in the song that perfectly captures mood of the seduction and cabaret at the same time. S D Burman was one of the most accomplished music composers Indian music industry has ever seen. Remember his song ‘Jaane wo kaise log the’ from the movie Pyaasa? Hemant Kumar will literally floor you with his finesse and class.

‘Naa Jaane Kyon’ was rendered in the immortal voice of Lata Mangeshkar. It was a very sweet, nice and appealing song from the movie ‘chhoti si baat’. ‘Na tum Humein Jaano’ from the movie ‘Baat ek raat ki’, was sung by Hemant da and it was everything that you could possible aspire for; soft, gentle, sentimental, pure and laid back.

‘Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh’ from Dil apna aur preet parayi was a Shankar Jaykishen composition and sung in the melodious voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The track had soft gentle rocking country-style rhythm and Lata, well, what more can I add to her voice quality? She was simply stupendous and quality personified.

Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh were two legends of Hindi film music. Each of them has given us numerous memorable hits. The talent and quality offered by these two singers is kind of incomparable and can never be duplicated if Lata is rightly called ‘Queen of Melodies’ then Mukesh was termed as ‘King of Tragic songs’. There is nothing anywhere in the world like Hindi cinema. It is unique inimitable brand of cinema that at which has characters that break into song, dance laughter just as easily as they weep, laugh and express all their emotions! Romantic songs always take you in a dreamy world especially with the soothing tunes and the lovely lyrics that mingle so beautifully. Hindi music lovers can find wonderful songs in every decade. This time, let’s take a look at some of the beautiful songs of yore. It is hard to just name few songs because of umpteen numbers of mesmerizing songs but then you are free to provide us your choices.

‘Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Me’ from YashRaj banner movie ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ starring Big B is all time favorite of many people. Great Mukesh had rendered voice for this wonderful song and even today, it has not lost its eternal appeal. I remember, listening to his song one fine morning and it was hard to ignore its evergreen appeal and impact.

‘Chhokar Mere Man Ko’ from the movie Yaarana is another evergreen song. Starring Amitabh Bachchan once again, Kishore kumar made this song immortal. Lyrics are quite simple and yet so meaningful. One of the best songs of composer Rajesh Roshan.

‘Mere Naina Saawan Bhaado’ from the movie Mehbooba starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini is another great hit. Song came in both male and female version but I guess, I will be slightly biased towards male version. It has got this haunting feel that will stay with you and will make you yearn for more.

‘Ek Haseena Thi’ from Showman Subhash Ghai’s super hit Karz has not lost its touch even amongst youngsters of today. Recently, Himesh Reshamiya tried his hand at this song in a new form but old is always gold. The guitar work is splendid and composers Laxmikant-Pyaarelal have done an incredible job. They deservedly won Filmfare award for Karz. I could just mention few songs and article is about to end. You can’t help but wonder at number of evergreen songs given by Hindi music industry.

Why old is gold?

Classic numbers in Hindi songs can be characterized as a perfect therapy to tired minds. They uplift our moods and take us to an era of innocence and purity. There was a time when artists happened to be classically trained maestros who gave their voice to Hindi film music. The contemporary drama style that existed around the globe was stage performances in the drama style. Inspired by the western concept or rather our own drama narration, the artists had virtual singing chorus and music backstage.

The coordination seemed complete and the music was arranged in a wholesome style. There are typicality’s with is very much evident in the style of music of O P Nayyar and the guru of music, R.D. Burman. Old is gold because of its power that is still evident which inspires young musicians to mix old songs and mingle the same with pop music.

The originality was also about lyrics and the style is very much exclusive. As recording studios in Bollywood were yet to be modernized, the music arrangement was very much authentic. The musicians and singers rehearsed for hours to get the right pitch and modulate the same into tracks. Classical touch was evident and many movies were also famous for its song and dance highlights.

The melody in the voice of Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Mohd. Rafi saab is distinct. Actors too preferred allegiance to their favorite singer like Raj Kapoor always teamed with Mukesh and the veteran Kishore Kumar was multi talented in many aspects. The time of seventies and eighties was richly influence by modernity brought in by disco and pop music. This also touched Indian music and stalwarts like R.D Burman or Bappi Lahiri explored the possibility of Hindi pop with full justice to the Hindi music.

Each era is respected but the distinct quality of a lullaby ( lori ) or a devotional song (bhajan) from the olden days ruffles our bygone days.
