De Dana Dan music review

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif have been successful in giving good musical numbers so far and De Dana Dan is the new one to that list. No brownie points for guessing who the music director of this film is? Yes, it’s Pritam. Pritam has delivered so many musical hits in the recent times that it almost feels unbelievable. De Dana Dan songs are also doing the chartbuster rounds for the past three weeks.

De Dana Dan album gives you six original tracks and six remix tracks. One of the top favorite in this album is Rishte Naate which is sung in the voice of Rahat Fatah Ali Khan. Soothing to the ears, Rishte Nate is a song that you will keep humming once that you have heard. This is a song whose melody stays with you. However, I particularly do not like the remix which is crooned by Kunal Ganjawala because it lacks the melody that the original one has.

Another song that has been a huge hit amongst the crowd is RDB ft Pritam’s Paisa Paisa which is a typical Akshay Kumar song. This is because the song reminds of Singh is King and Namaste London songs. In short, it is a typical Punjabi Bollywood track with some inspiration from Usher’s song ‘Yeah’. I also like the title track De Dana Dan which is full of energy. It charges you up. Sung by new group Ad boys, the song is already a big hit. The song Baamulaiza is Bollywood salsa number which is groovy and peppy. Don’t quite like the remix version though.

For the song Hotty Naughty, Pritam has picked the tune of the popular Haryanavi song Hat Ja Tau Pacche Ne. Quite an average one. The songs of ‘De Dana Dan’ are nice but they come with an expiry because these songs are not quite evergreen that you will hum them for a long time.

Best songs of 2009

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

We have almost come to an end of 2009 and here are some of the hit songs of the year. The first on the list is Dhan Te Nan from the movie Kaminey. The peppy energetic track swayed the crowd with its music and the lyrics as well. Next up on the list is all the songs from the movie Love Aaj Kal – be it Aahun Aahun, Mere Dil ka or Twist, audience loved all the tracks from this movie.

2009 also had some really cool numbers from the movie Wake up Sid which was directed by debutant Ayaan Mukerji. The lyrics of all the songs from this movie were really mesmerizing. Songs like Iktara and Aaj Kal are melodious and touches ones heart. Shankar Ehsaan and Loy created magic with the songs of this film. However, they failed to recreate the same magic for the film London Dreams whose music was quite weak.

Emraan Hashmi is one actor whose almost all songs have been a hit. And this continued with Tum Mile as well. The title track is so amazing. Even the song Dil Ibadat was loved by the audience. Music composer Pritam did a great job with the songs of this film.

Ajab prem Ki Ghazab Kahani also had some really soothing tracks. Kaise Batayein sung by Atif Aslam and Kailash Kher sends musical vibes to the heart.

Even though the film did not do quite well, the songs from the movie Kurbaan were loved by all. Shukran Allah and Ali Maula are my favorites. The music for this is given by Salim Sulaiman and the lyrics are penned by Irfan Siddiqui.

Also films like Paa and De Dhana Dan are releasing soon. The music for these films has already released and they are already added in the list of the best songs of 2009.

1990’s Hits

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

1990s gave us numerous musical hits. This was the decade of melody and mellifluous song. Composers like Nadeem-Shravan, Anand Milind, Anu Malik and Jatin-Lalit etc gave numerous melodies in this decade. This decade belonged to singers like Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamoorthy etc. the decade began with a bang with Mahesh Bhatt’s Aashiqui. Nadeem-Shravan announced their arrival this movie and so did Kumar Sanu. This movie also won his first Filmfare Award and thereafter he won 5 in a row. Astonishing indeed! Almost all the songs of this movie were huge hits but my personal favoruite is ‘Ab Tere Bin’.

Composers Jatin-Lalit considers this song as their best even today. Yes, I am talking about ‘Pehla Nasha’ from the youth-oriented movie JJWS (Jo Jeeta Wahi SIkandar). Truly a brilliant song, this number fired up romantic imagination of almost an entire generation. You will go to a different world listening to this song.

One of the most romantic songs of this decade was ‘Mujhe Raat Din’ sung brilliantly by Sonu Nigam. This song is still an underrated one and did not get its due. Had it been picturised on a top actor, sure it would have gained in popularity. Nevertheless, it retains its charm even today.

How can you forget ‘Tum Mile Dil Khile’ from the movie Criminal? I must admire underrated composer MM Kareem for this awesome composition. Rendered by Kumar Sanu, this one is a complete romantic song. The next in the list will surely be ‘Sandese Aate Hain’ from super hit Border.

90s was also the decade when Indian Mozart A R Rehman came into prominence. Just listen to his ‘Yeh Haseen Waadiyan’ from Roja and you will understand why he was proclaimed as one of the best thing that had ever happened to Indian music industry. Another Rehman composition that comes to my mind is ‘Nahin Saamne Tu’ from movie Taal. You just can’t get away from this Hariharan number.

competitive shows

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Inspired by happenings on the entertainment sector, television is capturing the essence of live singing competitions. There are various levels and categories judged by respected musicians and singers. There is a fair chance to exhibit, improve and present the talent for winning the hearts of the audience. With downloading of songs made much easier, the songs are forever available via reputable sites.

Mp3 or direct links are also enable for us to capture the songs of the olden era and the vivacity present in the disco days. Every song that was a thing of a past is now brought back alive in the original format. For people who love the fusion mix, there is wide choice to learn the exploring available in the remix versions. This is an art by itself and has to be learnt with caution and sincerity.

The shows are also based on celebrity judging but the real judge is the Indian audience who is esteemed the most. The panel judges give their opinion about the singing or presentation and openly suggest changes or improvements. This is shared openly and aired by the channels so also to generate a public opinion. The poll system is a great way to assess the viewership and excite interest of the public.

The shows based on childrens music also are available for open participation irrespective of the region or regionality. The children are coached and also allotted mentors who make a substantial improvement in their personality. There are a lot of elements in the competitive singing competitions. This is a mix of presentation, musical understanding, age and maturity in the concept. Downloadable music played on palm tops, organizers, mobiles is a refreshing way to understand the various levels in music and learn from the same.

Touching Songs in Recent Times

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

We are talking about songs that have managed to touch our hearts in recent times. One song that comes to my mind is ‘Mere Haath Mein’ from the Yashraj’s film ‘Fanaa’. Movie was a hit and so was this song. A very beautiful composition, it is very romantic and it boasts of some unexplainable feelings.

Kalyug from the Bhatt banners did cause ripples because of its music and story line. But one of the best hits of the movie, ‘Aadat’ is originally from the album ‘Jal’. The song leaves you exasperate with its melancholic and helpless feel. Song is extremely attractive and somehow pulls you towards it. You can’t help but fall in love with this song.

Taare Zameen Par earned lots of accolades for its novel theme and great acting. But one song that stayed with you even after you left the theatre is ‘Maa’. Just check its lyrics;

‘Bheed Mein Yun Na Chodo Mujhe

Ghar Laut Ke Bhi Aa Naa Paoon Maa

Bhej Na Itna Door Mujkko Tu

Yaad Bhi Tujhko Aa Naa Paoon Maa

Kya Itna Bura Hoon Main Maa

Kya Itna Bura Meri Maa’

How touching! Many viewers had tears in their eyes while listening to this song. This is simply a heart wrenching song that will leave you greatly affected. Talking about ‘Maa’, you must have listened to song ‘Mumma Meri Maa; from the movie Dasvidaniya. A very beautiful song, it had its moments. Kailash Kher has given his best in this song and that reflects in its effect on the listeners. Its lyrics;

‘Begdi kismat bhi sawanr jaayegi

Zindagi tarane khushi ke gayegi

Tere hote kiska dar

Tu duawon ka hai ghar’ were so well written and meaningful. Add to that, expressions given by lead actors on the screen and song becomes a must have in your collection.

Folk Music

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Folk music is in existence since centuries. Despite the onslaught of western songs and new technologies, genre of folk music has stayed and thrived as well. India is extremely rich in terms of folk music. There is a great history of folk music in India. In fact, if there is one genre that truly defines Indian civilization then it must be folk music. What makes Indian folk music beautiful is amazing variety in the landscapes of India. The cultural diversity prevalent in India is well reflected in infinite range of folk music styles found in different parts of the country. There is no common folk music genre in India. Every region in India has its own peculiar style of folk music.

Many people consider folk and tribal music as one and same but truth is far from that. Both are different genres and we will cover tribal music in some other post. Tribal music typically reflects cultural differences present in India whereas folk music is particular to every region. Most of the tribal music genres have remained as it is since centuries.

The indigenous genres of Indian music are classical, folk and tribal. And the most fascinating aspect is all the three have retained their essence even in this modern world. Whether it is Hindustani music or Carnatic music, they command a loyal fan following. Classical music is always taught and it follows certain rules and learning whereas, tribal and folk music is not taught and they are more of extempore performance depending upon the occasion. Classical music is detailed education and it requires practice whereas folk music often thrives on spontaneous or impromptu performance. Many people must be aware of Bhangra which is nothing but a folk genre and we know how it is popular not only in India but also in foreign locations.

Beautiful Songs

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Music in any form is appealing to the human senses. And why only humans? Some experiments show even animals react positively to the melody of music. Now, that simply demonstrates universal power of music. Talking about Indian music, we have come across numerous soul-stirring songs since the time bollywood started to churn music. Playback music completely changed the way music was perceived in the country. Indians were always very fond of music but filmy songs gave music new dimension and new loyal fan base. Let’s talk about some of the soothing songs that not only touched you but also proved to be a hit among the masses.

Song ‘Kasam Ki Kasam’ belongs to movie ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ from the Barjatya Banner. Movie was a dud but its songs sold like hot cakes. The song I am talking about is extremely gorgeous and manages to touch some hidden chords inside you. Lyrics are totally mesmerizing and song lovers really loved this song.

Movie Kisna failed to create any magic on big screen but it did give us a breathtaking song ‘Hum hain Iss pal Yahan’. This song is full of love and passion and you can’t remain untouched by it. The song, on one hand is utterly romantic and yet a thread of sadness runs through it. A R Rahman was truly wonderful in the composition and Udit Narayan and Madhushree did complete justice to the song.

Not for nothing we people love to call A R Rahman ‘Indian Mozart’. It’s hard to remember which one musician changed the film music industry as drastically as Rahman did. Though, he gained international recognition recently when he won ‘Oscar’ for Slumdog Millionaire but his talent was pretty evident since the time he made debut with unforgettable Roja. One song of his that consistently finds a mention in favorite list of numerous music lovers is ‘Tu Hi Re’ from the movie Bombay. It is just way too hard to resist the magic of this song. Probably this song might bring you tears and yet you can’t help but marvel at the eternal beauty of this song.

Actor singers

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Hindi cine magic is full of splendor and discoveries. The earlier or very first films were of the experimental variety. The concept was simple and nothing was talked about glamour. Going by the stage principle, performance was done with mostly actors who not only gave the dialogues but also did the background score along with singing. Suraiya is one such actor who comes to our mind.

The beauty of actor Noor Jehan and the simple melody of her songs are worth a collection. The songs sung by her are memorable and stirs pleasant memories of the old-gold days. As professional and competition slowly commenced in the field, singers were a distinct self. It was common that Raj Kumar saab insisted for the voice of Mukesh and such blending is still present.

In the recent years this trend was almost non existent and actors loaning their voices to their own characterization in music was also of popular value. The song Shivani sung by Sanjay Dutt is one such idea. Sridevi also sang the song ‘Chandni’ for her own film and this was quite a hit. This was an idea which many times were a hit and yet there was more of promotion value linked to the same.

Aamir Khan’s ‘Kya bolti tu’ is still a popular number and these one-off songs in the Hindi cinema do work. One person who is distinguished and has an unparallel equation to his acting and singing capabilities is Kishore Kumar. His songs whether comedy or romance or tragedy were actually enacted via his voice. One could sense the mirth he must have felt while recording ‘ Ek chatur naar’ for Padosan or also felt his tears while singing ‘ Kiska rasta Dekhe’.

Many actors like Shekar Suman are also getting into the music scenario with their single albums and much glamour quotient to display their talent in a broad spectrum. New talents like Shruti Hasan is making her debut as actor singer with the film Luck.

Hummable, contagious and repeatable and some words that describe the latest new songs that have come along with the new releases. Movie makers are definitely noting the need to accommodate the versatile needs of the audience. Packaging different moods that are conveyed through songs and interludes is the greatest forte of a musician.

New age musicians are using the latest in sound mixing and voice modulation which gives rise to new songs that have a lot of repeat value. Dan de dan from Kaminey is rocking and the other song Pehli baar has a soft feel. But both seem catchy. The biggest USP of any song is that it has the ability to reach the audience faster which is why the promos also cash in on this aspect.

The trio group of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy usually keep up their trump cards with surprising new numbers which is gladly accepted by the audience. The huge talent in the Indian film industry also comes from the keen sense of acquiring knowledge and eagerness to give the best. It is surprising despite so many dialects and languages the versatility is seen with so many singers crossing language barriers and able to sing cross lingually.

Accessibility to new songs is also why the viewers love hearing the songs often as there is ample opportunity to play it in parties, discos and also general entertainment. Bollywood Hindi songs of the remix variety is here to stay with so many admirers. Assorted discs are also available as wedding songs, thematic ones and the regular masala mix. New releases bringing in new songs is  great entertainment to the all ages.
