Indian Rock Bands

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Indian music has changed a lot in last two decades matching steps to the changes taking place in other parts of the world. Earlier, Indian music was all about film songs and classical music. But with changing times, other genres also started to gain popularity on Indian soil. Rock music has literally flourished in India in last few years. A proof of this emerging phenomenon is coming up of new rock bands. Some of these rock bands have also entered into mainstream Indian music. Few of them have joined hands with global rock groups and had massively successful concerts. Some of the famous rock bands in India are,

Indian Ocean

Cactus

Thermal and a Quarter

Avial

The Superfuzz

The White Stripes

Bhoomi

Insomnia

Kryptos

Spitfire

Evergreen

Infernal Wrath

Cassini’s Division

Fossils

Ethereal Rush

History Makers

Fossils

Phoeni

Corrode

Synap

Rage Against the Machine

The Galeej Gurus

The Decibel

Among the rock bands listed above, some have got more fame and recognition in India. For example, Indian Ocean has been credited with being one of the firsts to popularize rock music in India. This is a Delhi based Rock band that excels in compiling music from genres as different as rock, fusion, jazz and Indian.

Similarly, ‘Cactus’ has the prized distinction of being the first professional rock band from the cultural city of Kolkata. Formed in 1992, most of the songs compiled by the group are in Bengali. They have performed live on no less than 2000 stages. Rock band ‘Avial’ is from God’s own country, Kerala and is basically a Malayalee rock band. The group had also released an album by the name of ‘Avial’ that attained a cult status in Indian rock world.

‘Parikrama’ belongs to the top rock bands in India and is known for giving original scores and electrifying live performances. The USP of the band is delectable mix of classical musical instruments in combination with conventional instruments used for western music like guitar, drums and keyboards.

Pyar Impossible Songs Review

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Well, trust Uday Chopra to give his best while trying to save his ‘down-in-the-dumps’ career. After a string of forgettable performances barring successful Dhoom capers, he has tried turning to production along with acting in ‘Pyar Impossible.’ The Yash Raj Banner’s movie has been directed by ‘once upon an actor….Jugal Hansraj’. In the movie, Uday is playing the role of a quintessential geek in love with the hottest girl ever.

Uday Chopra has also written the script of the movie which is basically a tried and tested plot. Music has been composed by current hot favorite, Salim-Sulaiman. Songs of Pyar Impossible are well, melodic, pop, spunky and what not yet very much inspired from western numbers.

The album begins with ‘Alisha’ rendered by Anushka Manchanda in her husky voice. A fun song, this one is. Next one is the title song, ‘Pyar impossible’ sung wonderfully by duo of Vishal Dadlani and Dominique Cerejo. Salim-Sulaiman have created nice and easy arrangement for the song. However, song seems inspired from the ‘Six Pence None The Richer’s hit single, Kiss me’.

Neha Bhasin and Benny Dayal have crooned together ‘You and Me’. The song is more like a hurried mixture of R& B and rap and fails to excite listeners. Up next is ‘Ten on Ten’ by Mahua Kamat, Anushka Manchanda and Naresh Kamath. Just another run of the mill stuff.

‘Ek thi ladki’ is all about storyline of the movie. More of a Barbie and bubblegum kind of song with all the overbearing cheers of the chorus. To sum up, the album may score some hits in college campus otherwise, just slightly ‘impossible’ to receive ‘pyar’ from the audiences.

Evergreen Tracks

Some songs cannot lose out on their luster. They will keep making us hum their tunes whenever music player starts playing such songs. Old songs were truly brilliant when it comes to meaningful lyrics. The melody combined with simple but effective composition makes these songs eternally appealing. This might seem like a personal choice yet I have firm belief that many of you readers will find resonance of your choices in few songs given below.

Mera kuchh samaan lauta do’ must be one of the most formidable and brilliant composition of legendary music director R. D. Burman. This is a mesmerizing song that has pain, longing, romance and almost tragic in its beauty.

O.P.Nayyar was another legend of the golden era who gave numerous hits. One of his favorites was ‘Aaiye Meharbaan’. The singer has done a commendable job in the song that perfectly captures mood of the seduction and cabaret at the same time. S D Burman was one of the most accomplished music composers Indian music industry has ever seen. Remember his song ‘Jaane wo kaise log the’ from the movie Pyaasa? Hemant Kumar will literally floor you with his finesse and class.

‘Naa Jaane Kyon’ was rendered in the immortal voice of Lata Mangeshkar. It was a very sweet, nice and appealing song from the movie ‘chhoti si baat’. ‘Na tum Humein Jaano’ from the movie ‘Baat ek raat ki’, was sung by Hemant da and it was everything that you could possible aspire for; soft, gentle, sentimental, pure and laid back.

‘Ajeeb dastaan hai yeh’ from Dil apna aur preet parayi was a Shankar Jaykishen composition and sung in the melodious voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The track had soft gentle rocking country-style rhythm and Lata, well, what more can I add to her voice quality? She was simply stupendous and quality personified.

These were just few of the evergreen hits and trust me, there are hundreds more. We will keep exploring several other gems. Keep checking this space.
