Why old is gold?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Classic numbers in Hindi songs can be characterized as a perfect therapy to tired minds. They uplift our moods and take us to an era of innocence and purity. There was a time when artists happened to be classically trained maestros who gave their voice to Hindi film music. The contemporary drama style that existed around the globe was stage performances in the drama style. Inspired by the western concept or rather our own drama narration, the artists had virtual singing chorus and music backstage.

The coordination seemed complete and the music was arranged in a wholesome style. There are typicality’s with is very much evident in the style of music of O P Nayyar and the guru of music, R.D. Burman. Old is gold because of its power that is still evident which inspires young musicians to mix old songs and mingle the same with pop music.

The originality was also about lyrics and the style is very much exclusive. As recording studios in Bollywood were yet to be modernized, the music arrangement was very much authentic. The musicians and singers rehearsed for hours to get the right pitch and modulate the same into tracks. Classical touch was evident and many movies were also famous for its song and dance highlights.

The melody in the voice of Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Mohd. Rafi saab is distinct. Actors too preferred allegiance to their favorite singer like Raj Kapoor always teamed with Mukesh and the veteran Kishore Kumar was multi talented in many aspects. The time of seventies and eighties was richly influence by modernity brought in by disco and pop music. This also touched Indian music and stalwarts like R.D Burman or Bappi Lahiri explored the possibility of Hindi pop with full justice to the Hindi music.

Each era is respected but the distinct quality of a lullaby ( lori ) or a devotional song (bhajan) from the olden days ruffles our bygone days.

New film songs: Kaminey and Teree Sang

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Vishal Bharadwaj’s Kaminey has been quite a hit and has got four star ratings by most publications. Kaminey has some of the most awesome Dhan te Nan tracks. All of us have been grooving to Kaminey’s dhan te nan which is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Vishal Dadlani and no wonder the music is superbly fantastic. The music is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj who is the director of the film as well.  And the lyrics are penned by Gulzar. Another song that refuses to get off my mouth is Raat Ke Dhai Baje sung by Suresh Wadkar, Rekha Bhardwaj, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala and Earl E D. The song has quite an earthy raw feel to it. I even love Pehli Baar Mohabbat by Mohit Chauhan which is quite a romantic number. Other songs include Fatak sung by  Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher, Go Charlie Go Theme song. Dhan te Nan and Raat ke dhai baje remixes are also well done. Raat ke dhai baje is what I am downloading now, what about you?

The music of Teree Sang is given by newcomers Sachin and Jigar. The lyrics are given by Sameer. And there are a couple of guest songs each by Anu Malik and Bappi Lahiri as well. Songs of Sachin-Jigar must be heard atleast once because they are impressive. Opening song ‘I will be there for you’ is fantastic and singers Clinton and Dominique Cerejo come together for this lovely romantic youthful number. One song that has swept away everyone is ‘Morey Saiyan’, which is an absolute killer however, the song doesn’t feature a remix version and I think we all would have quite liked it had it been there!  Another song ‘Maula Mila De’ keeps the rock mood on with the western arrangements that it has. So go ahead and enjoy these songs!

Yesteryears

The magic of music lifts our spirit. It is a rejuvenating experience. The time of sixties and seventies had a typical trait in Hindi music. This was also a time for global musical change which our musicians got a whiff of and incorporated the same in the various interludes. There were emerging new artists who were ready to explore and experiment.

The songs had more accentuation on lyrics. The format of qawali or a gazal was authentic in the sense there was no kind of mixing. Actors then were also singers like Kishor Kumar, Leena Chandawarkar and many more. They were trained in classical singing and had a general flexibility to adapt to any kind of music recording.

Legends like Rafi saab, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishor da have given their best to music which is still enjoyed by our generation. The music itself was a pure form with genuine instruments played intelligently and arranged by the musicians. The era of lyricists was powerful with Kaifi Azmi and many other poets who turned to be lyricists.

Bollywood gave lot of opportunity to musicians and singers to bring out their best knowledge in music. The situation based songs had a certain real feel which is enigmatic. The songs got popular with each film and radio was the only dependable medium to play the numbers. Tuning to ‘bela ke phool’ on radio everyday unfolds memories of the olden era which is cherished by all of us.

The rhythm of dance like cha-cha-cha or twist is very well felt with clapping of hands and using percussion instruments to retain the western flavor in the Hindi songs. One can actually visualize the artists dancing when we hear Shola jo badke or any renderings from the R.D Burman camp. Thematic songs were also popular that also seemed the perfect formula for film making like the bidaai song, love songs or jilted in love lyrics.
